Don’t Waste Your Downtime

An article about the best way to recharge

In a busy world, downtime feels like a reward. After a long day of school, sports, or responsibilities, most people grab their phone, turn on a show, or scroll through social media. It feels like rest, but in reality, we end up feeling just as tired, if not more. So what’s the best way to use our downtime to feel better?

Not all rest is created equal. Some activities, like endlessly scrolling or multitasking while “relaxing” on the couch, can get your brain overstimulated. Instead of helping you recover, they can leave you mentally drained after even 30 minutes of this. This is sometimes called “fake rest”; it doesn’t give your mind or body the break they really need.

Real rest actually helps your body recover, and your mind reset. For example, simple activities like taking a walk, stretching, or sitting quietly without distractions can help lower stress levels. These moments give your brain space to slow down, which is something it rarely gets during a busy day.

Downtime can also be a chance to recharge emotionally. Talking to a friend, listening to music, or even doing something you genuinely enjoy, like drawing or playing a sport, can improve your mood in a way that scrolling never will. Even just a few minutes of doing something meaningful can make a difference.

The key isn’t to avoid screens or fun activities completely; it’s about how to balance your activities. It’s okay to relax with a show or spend time online, but try to mix in activities that truly help you recharge. Even small changes, like taking a 10-minute walk or putting your phone down for a short break, can have a big impact.

Next time you find yourself with free time, ask yourself: Is this helping me recharge, or just helping me pass time?
