A Classroom in the Ice Rink: San Francisco Theater on Ice

By: Albert Zeng

Teaching a class of 20 kids may be challenging at times, but it’s even harder when the classroom is an Ice Rink and class starts at 5 AM in the morning. Figure skating coaches Louis Vachon and Paige Scott instruct the San Francisco Theater on Ice team, a group of figure skaters who perform together and act out a story on the ice. As the coaches of the San Francisco Ice Theater, Coach Vachon and Coach Scott create a theme for the performance and instruct the kids on how to make that story come to life. Reporter Albert Zeng interviews the two coaches, who provide insight on the challenges of teaching in the ice rink environment.
