A Vast Selection

Submitted By: Jessica Lee

On February 9th, I attended the course and elective information at Monta Vista High School for incoming eighth graders. On that night, I remember walking into a room filled with many elective and club choices. One of the most important parts of going into high school, in my opinion, is deciding which classes to take. The featured courses included art, journalism, DECA, FBLA and foreign languages, among countless others. Despite the numerous choices that exist, one of the courses in particular that caught my attention was the drama program.

Throughout my life, I have always been interested in acting and theater. During my years at Kennedy Middle School, I have gone to see several Monta Vista plays and performances. While watching these plays from the seats, I would try to imagine what it would be like if I were on stage, casted in one of these productions. Now that I am an eighth grader that will soon be going to ninth grade, I have the access and ability to choose what I would like to do from a vast selection of courses.
After considering my options, I am excited that drama will be one of my choices going into ninth grade. I believe that taking drama will help me develop many important characteristics that will be beneficial later on in life, including better public speaking skills, greater confidence, and a heightened ability to interact and communicate well with others. Choosing drama as a course will also be enjoyable, because it will allow me to spend time with my friends. When thinking about this course, I am hopeful that I may be able to learn more about set design, costume design, lighting, and also stage management. Though drama will only be a portion of my future high school experiences, in general, I am very excited about going to Monta Vista next fall. I believe that high school will mark a new chapter in my life, where I will be presented many more opportunities to pursue my dream in life.
