Balloon Internet

By: Dan

During natural disasters, many vital services may go down, communication with the outside world may be next to impossible; especially in remote regions. To combat this problem, huge balloons have been made that provide basic internet access. Peru suffers from extreme rain and flooding, and these balloons have been able to provide internet access to the population. This project, called Project Loon, wants to help bring internet to developing nations as well.

These “loon balloons” float 20 kilometers up into the atmosphere, at the brink of space. High speed internet is transmitted up to the balloon, which is then redistributed back down for use. Much of the population on Earth does not have reliable internet, and these balloons can be the first step in providing the world with reliable internet.
