Guide to Weight Lifting

By: Derek Dong

If you don’t know what you’re doing, weightlifting can definitely seem like a frustratingly difficult endeavor to embark on. But with the proper knowledge and a lot of practice, it can undoubtedly be very fun and rewarding — a kind of delayed gratification so to speak. Therefore, it is imperative that novices not only have to knowledge to create their first routine but have the ability to find and use professional resources to further their own lifting careers as well.

Luckily, in the modern era of technology, it is not hard to find terabytes of information online. The only problem is separating the gold from the garbage. Fortunately, this is not very difficult to do, as long as you adhere to a stringent set of rules.

First, you must ensure the validity of the source. Meaning, if the information is coming from a licensed professional, like Dr. Mike Israetel, it’s probably more credible than your run of the mill Instagram “model”. Also, beware the snack salesman, promising mad gains with no effort. If it is too good to be true, it probably is. No drug (other than steroids), supplement, diet, or workout out there will ever be able to beat hard science, work and time. To help you begin your journey, some of my favorite sources are Jeff Nippard, AthleanX, Dr. Mike Israetel, and any scientific literature you may find on the subject.

Ultimately, it is up to you to put in the time and work necessary to become the “buff boi” you want to be.
