Assailant Dead After Attack on Michigan Synagogue; No Congregants Harmed

The suspect conducted an attack on Temple Israel, which stands as the largest Reform synagogue in the Detroit metropolitan area during March 12, 2026. Law enforcement officials reported that an active shooter situation developed when the suspect used his vehicle to attack while firing his weapon, which resulted in his death at the crime scene. The incident began at noon when a suspect entered the United States’ largest synagogue which operates an early childhood learning center that serves 140 students. The suspect drove a truck through the front entrance of the building after which he began firing his weapon inside. Security personnel stationed on site engaged the suspect, and the vehicle caught fire during the confrontation. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the suspect died from the security response or from other causes in the crash. Authorities reported that a security guard sustained injuries when a vehicle hit him, and he required hospitalization for treatment of his non-life-threatening wounds. During the response, 30 law enforcement officers required medical treatment for their smoke inhalation injuries. The situation resulted in no injuries to any of the congregants, children, teachers, or staff members. All individuals inside the synagogue were evacuated safely. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) federal agents arrived at the scene to join local police and other agencies while they treated the incident as a serious violent crime to investigate its potential motives. Early reports indicate a large quantity of apparent explosives was found in the suspect’s vehicle, prompting bomb technicians to secure the area. The attack received condemnation from Michigan officials, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who expressed their support for the Jewish community. The governor declared that antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan, while he requested people to remain calm and work together.
