Teenagers use a lot of cosmetics, even though they don’t need it. They use hair gel, nail polish, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, foundation, highlighter, etc… the list never ends. However, a lot of these products contain ingredients that are very harmful to the adolescent body. Many ingredients cause hormone imbalances which harm the body.
For makeup, teenagers should avoid loose powders and ingredients including vitamin A such as retinol, retinyl palmitate or acetate. If you are planning to use perfume, avoid “diethyl phthalate” and “fragrance” if it is listed as an ingredient. Smelling good is important but your health should be your first priority.
Additionally, a lot of teenagers battle against acne, but it’s important to stay away from ingredients such as triclosan, parabens, and PEG. Many minors get the wrong idea that acne is treated by drying the skin out. Contrary to popular belief, drying out your skin will only make the skin produce more oil. The best way to treat acne is to use a light moisturizer to keep hydrated. Gel moisturizers are ideal, and clay masks may be your best friend!
In the end, remember that you don’t NEED makeup. You are fine the way you are, and ironically, using makeup causes premature aging. The most important thing is to protect your skin. Use sunscreen, don’t tan on purpose, and avoid harmful ingredients.
Before purchasing cosmetics or skincare products, do your research on harmful ingredients!
