Sports Injuries

Sports are an exciting subject. Different sports have different environments and outcomes, but the goal is all the same: to win. In team sports, there are often rivalries, and that may lead to a rage against the other team. Blood, sweat, and tears usually give way to adrenaline rushes and a big win, but what happens when that doesn’t happen?

At Homestead High School in Cupertino, California, a sophomore passed away due to sudden medical conditions. She participated in a basketball game, and was knocked unconscious in the heat of the moment and hit her head. To many people’s surprise, when she woke up, she continued to play, determined to win for her team. In a few short minutes, she passed out again, and was rushed to a hospital. Unfortunately, she did not wake up again.

In recent years, injuries in sports gradually increased. Adolescents engaged in physical activity are usually in great physical and mental shape. But many sports, especially those with high intensity, can also easily result in bodily harm..

In a study of 12799 cases of brain injuries in over the past 20 years, most of those affected are between the ages of 5 and 19.In  recent years, concussion rates have also skyrocketed. From 2002 to 2012, cases of concussion doubled to almost 4 million. 90% of most diagnosed concussions don’t involve the loss of consciousness at all, and an estimated 6 million people in America face traumatic brain injury-related disabilities.

From these statistics, we can learn that we should be very careful when we are playing any sports. Warming up thoroughly helps, and when accidents do happen, stop immediately and get checked by a doctor. By playing safe, all people who love sports can enjoy them.
