Chemist and Harvard professor Daniel G. Nocera has genetically engineered a bacteria that absorbs hydrogen and carbon dioxide and converts the molecules into alcohol fuel. This bacteria Ralston Eutropha is engineered to take in carbon dioxide and hydrogen and convert it into ATP, a molecule organisms use to produce energy.
Nocera’s bacteria will create a significant impact, as it produces biomass ten times more efficiently than plants. In addition, it also produces six times more alcohol, which can be burned directly. This recent news will appear in the journal, Science.
