Oreo

Submitted by: Cindy Zhang

My brown toy poodle, Oreo, who is now two years old, is my first pet. Although I spend most of my time in boarding school, he always welcomes me when I return home during holidays. Sometimes, I will ask my mother to put her phone in front of him when I Skype her, and he will lick the screen when I call his name.

The history of men and animals can be traced all the way back to the beginning of civilization; their relationships have been long lasting, especially the relationships between humans and dogs. Dogs are thought to be the friendliest and most loyal animals because there are many cases of when dogs help us. In 2015, a photo of a dog carrying a baby in his mouth went viral on social media. The dog found an abandoned newborn in a pile of trash and safely carried the baby to the nearest neighborhood. Evidently, dogs often show more kindness than people due to their kind nature.

We share the earth with animals of all types and the balance can not be broken. However, earth’s ecosystems are rapidly degrading due to habitat loss, which is also the most common cause of endangerment. Habitat loss is mainly caused by human destructions such as deforestation. Various species of that original habitat slowly run out of food and shelter. In order to save the animals and prevent the rate of habitat loss from increasing, we must start protecting our habitats.  Let’s raise awareness to protect all the beautiful species on this earth. It is our responsibility to care for the environment and those who surround us.

After all, “this land is my land and this land is your land,” so let’s learn to effectively share it together.
