Water is one of the most important resources in our lives. It is extremely useful, for we consume it, wash ourselves with it, and is a major component found in almost everything we use in our daily lives. What can we do without it?
Nothing.
We often take this precious substance for granted, and neglect to find the importance in saving water. However, in places that suffer from droughts, people must make sure that they are saving as much water as possible, so that they can continue to use it in the future.
Saving water does not mean refusing to shower or refusing to use the toilets. It means that you should only use the amount of water that you actually need. There are many products that promote water efficiency, but they tend to be pricey; more importantly, there are many ways to save water on a daily basis without them. For example, instead of standing idly in the shower, you can challenge yourself to take the shortest shower possible. In addition to controlling your shower time, you can turn off the faucets when you aren’t using them, whether you’re washing the dishes, washing your hands, or brushing you teeth. According to Water Use It Wisely, you can save up to four gallons per minute if the water is turned off as you brush your teeth and wash your face.
Aside from the actions you can perform in your home, you can also make a difference by controlling your sprinklers. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, landscaping can take approximately 60% of a household’s water use. Up to 50% of that water can be wasted due to evaporation, wind, runoff, and inefficient irrigation. To prevent this excessive waste, you can plant native plants, which require little water, and also put organic mulch around the plants to keep them hydrated.
All in all, there are so many ways to save water without installing new devices. If you try to use a minimal amount of water, then you will make a positive impact in this world. Leave the world better than you found it.
Save the water, save the planet.
