When I was a freshman, I remember the days when I looked in awe at the seniors. They were so laid back, mature, and seemed to be having the times of their lives. Teachers who taught both seniors and juniors would grumble about “senioritis” and how it was causing low grades and an overall lack of motivation. Now that I have survived three and a half years of high school, I kind of get what my teachers were talking about. Understanding a second semester senior is something that you can only do by being one.
As first semester ends, when you can breathe a sigh of relief with your college applications turned in and your finals over, the lack of motivation and laziness slowly creeps upon you. You go to school, noticing your fellow classmates beginning to openly muse upon the reason they are in school. You get home, and although you know you can finish your homework in an hour, you struggle to even pull your books out of your half empty backpack. Even the simple task of doing a ten minute homework assignment becomes a chore as you procrastinate and procrastinate, putting off the work till it’s 12PM at night. But, the second semester of your senior year also presents immense opportunities. The extra hours of free time so many seniors use to watch Netflix and play video games gave me the time to do hours of volunteering and work every week. I could read for pleasure without having to worry about finishing a huge load of schoolwork or flunking a test. I hang out with my friends and catch up on all the missed social activities that a regular, busy high school student would miss out on. Some classes are actually fun; I can’t remember a time when I looked forward to going to first period or entering fifth period after lunch.
Well, school is quickly coming to an end and the time will come when I have to say goodbye to high school. But until then, I will savor every day of second semester.
