Over the years, there has been a rise in more and more students attending single-gender schools. Before the 19th century, single-gender schools were very common. Recently, the number of single-gender schools and students rose immensely due to studies about education. Studies have shown that boys and girls brains are wired differently and they learn differently. Additionally, boys and girls brains also mature at different rates. The results of single-gender schools are controversial. Some believe that this kind of education helps because the lack of the presence of the other gender can allow them to focus on ways they learn best. Students also tend to focus easier when they are surrounded by the same gender. Some fiercely independent students may attend single-gender schools because these schools provide them with the kind of environment in which they are able to be truly independent. This rise of single-gender schools shows that our generation is changing and caring more and more about education and our future.
