On August 21, 2017 a total solar eclipse occurred and was visible from the continental United States. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and Sun, casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface. The eclipse’s land coverage began in Oregon at 10:16 a.m. PDT, and ended in South Carolina at 2:44 p.m. EDT. The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States will occur on April 8, 2024.
