New Smartphone Processors

With humanity’s quest for artificial intelligence, we’ve started to put semblances of it into many things, including our phones. The iPhone X has a “Neural Engine” in its new processing chip, and the Pixel 2 has an AI imaging chip. But what do these processors actually do?

To state simply, these chips are able to decide for itself what something is based on millions of results. For example, if you were to take a picture of a dog, the phone may be able to recognize that it is a dog because it has the information on what millions of dogs look like, and would be able to match characteristics to the picture you just took. It’s kind of creepy to think about now, but soon, I can imagine this kind of feature to be very useful for scientists, students, and the curious.
