Pesticides

Every person has eaten inorganic fruits or vegetables at some point in his or her life. However, many people do not understand the difference between organic and inorganic foods. Inorganic products are foods that have been in contact with pesticides. Pesticides include any substance used to kill, repel, or control certain pests that are unwanted because they impede crop growth.

There are many types of pesticides that are used for different purposes. For instance, herbicides are used to get rid of unwanted plants growing around the target crop. Insecticides, on the other hand, are used to rid crops of insects. Though nominal amounts of residual pesticides on fruits and vegetables may not seem harmful at the moment, the long term effect can be dangerous. Though you may not realize it, an inorganic apple can have around 30 different pesticides on its skin. Even washing the fruits and vegetables will not completely remove the lingering pesticides that seep into the fruit. Strawberries, apples, carrots, celery, spinach, grapes, apples, cucumbers are just a few types of food that you may want to avoid if they are not organic because they have the highest amount of pesticides.

While pesticides rid the environment of pests, actually unintentionally harm humans as well. Digesting pesticides over a long period of time can lead not only to health risks, but have been known to be carcinogenic. Long term exposure to pesticides has also led to asthma, Parkinson’s disease, depression, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and leukemia.

There are many ways to prevent pesticides from reaching your body. Simply buying organic produce from the supermarket is the best way to decrease exposure pesticides. If you do not have access to organic foods, then thoroughly washing your fruit and vegetables is another good way to limit the amount of pesticides that you ingest. Even not wearing shoes in the house could help, because if you use chemical fertilizers to treat your lawn, walking through it and entering your house could bring in pesticides.

Exposure to pesticides, though seemingly very insignificant, could actually harm you greatly in the long run. Being exposed to pesticides could lead to many different diseases and illnesses. Through the examples above, you can reduce the amount of pesticides that you encounter every day.
